Review: Minerals Golf Club

February 21, 2022

The only 9-hole course at Crystal Springs Resort, Minerals offers strong value, decent variety, and good conditions on a hilly terrain. At just a par 31, this is a course I recommend to both novices and better golfers looking for some practice.  … More Review: Minerals Golf Club

Review: Berkshire Valley Golf Course

October 28, 2021

With strong conditions, beautiful views, and a number of memorable holes, Berkshire Valley is criminally underrated in the New Jersey public golf scene and is a course I’d recommend to all in the area. … More Review: Berkshire Valley Golf Course

Review: Fox Hopyard Golf Club

January 5, 2019

Located just off the Connecticut coastline, Fox Hopyard is another upscale Roger Rulewich design featuring dramatic elevation changes, good conditioning, and strong variety. Although not an elite course, Fox Hopyard is certainly one of the best public options in Connecticut and worth a play. … More Review: Fox Hopyard Golf Club

Review: Ballyowen Golf Club

October 15, 2018

While I feel Ballyowen is overrated and falsely advertised as a links course, there’s no denying it’s a very good upscale public course. With strong conditioning, tremendous views, and several very good holes, this is clearly one of the best public courses in New Jersey and a viable option for those in the New York City area. … More Review: Ballyowen Golf Club

Review: Yale Golf Course

August 19, 2018

While conditioning and the closing stretch are a bit underwhelming, Yale is easily amongst the most architecturally magnificent courses in America, featuring numerous world-class template holes on a difficult terrain. I suggest all serious golf aficionados play this brilliantly quirky gem if given the opportunity. … More Review: Yale Golf Course

Review: Meadow Brook Golf Club

October 1, 2016

While Newport National is the prized gem of Rhode Island public golf, Meadow Brook is an underrated course that offers better value and fantastic conditions. This is a course I would recommend to anyone in the area. … More Review: Meadow Brook Golf Club

A look at the tough closing hole at Bulle Rock from a few different angles. At over 450 yards, this downhill par 4 features water down the left the entire way and a tiny green surrounded by water as well. A fitting finisher at a tough Pete Dye track.
Bulle Rock Golf Course - Havre de Grace, MD
The par 4 closer at Lake of Isles North is an excellent Cape hole with an exhilarating teeshot over water. This approach is again all aerial over another hazard.
The 17th hole at Lake of Isles North almost appears as a long par 3 at first glance, but be assured there is some fairway out there some 215 yards from the teebox. Not the most interesting hole architecturally, but stunningly gorgeous and quite unique.
Opening day is coming up in the Northeast tomorrow and I couldn’t be more excited! Pictured here is a course that surprised me last year - Lake of Isles North Course in Connecticut. A 36 hole facility at Foxwoods Casino, the North Course is public and designed by Rees Jones. While I didn’t love the private South Course, I quite enjoyed the North Course with its strong conditioning, beautiful views, and numerous memorable holes like the par 3 2nd below. Like its sister, this is an extremely difficult track with lots of hazards and forced carries. While not everyone feels this way, this is the best public course in Connecticut in my book and a course I highly recommend in the area.
Some pictures from Bethpage Green last summer. This is the fourth course I’ve played at Bethpage with only the Yellow remaining before completing all five. The Green Course was actually the first course at the complex, opening in 1923 as a Devereux Emmet designed private club. Originally known as Lenox Hills CC, the Club failed during the Great Depression and was bought by the State. A.W. Tillinghast redesigned the course in 1934, making room for future courses.
