Bethpage Blue Course - Farmingdale, New York There are five courses at Bethpage State Park and all of them were touched in some way by one of my favorite architects, A.W. Tillinghast. The Blue Course was actually his first design there, opening in 1935, but Alfred Tull significantly altered the course in 1958 when building the Yellow Course. Unfortunatey, only pieces of Tilly’s work remains. Despite this, I quite enjoyed Bethpage Blue and found it to be a good challenge with a 3450 yard front 9 and more difficult 4-4-3 start than the Black Course. There are at least seven holes that feature an elevated green requiring a carry over a valley. At $38 for out-of-staters to walk, I wonder if there are many better deals in golf?! Sad news yesterday coming out of Wisconsin as The Bull at Pinehurst Farms filed for foreclosure. This 2003 Jack Nicklaus design was a Top 100 public course in the country as recently as 2017, but has been having financial issues for some time now. Hopefully whoever buys the property considers keeping the course. One thing’s for sure though -the bar for public golf is insanely high in Wisconsin! Is there a better state for public golf??

Last week, I had the chance to play one of my favorite places, Newport Country Club. I’ve long contended there are few better places to have a summertime round than this historic seaside links, but I’m now convinced that there’s also no better course for winter golf in the northeast. With little snow thanks to the nearby Atlantic Ocean, pins are usually in year-round and warmer weather this year allowed the course to truly look and feel like the British Isles. I absolutely cannot wait for the 2020 U.S. Senior Open here.

RIP to the legendary Pete Dye. He deserves a lot of credit for bringing golf out of the dark ages and for designing courses the general public can enjoy. What’s your favorite Pete Dye course? Mine’s Whistling Straits but that might have some competition in 2020!

2019 was the best golf year of my life. What began with 3 months off due to injury culminated in playing some of my favorite courses ever and ones that had been on the bucket list for a long time. I’ll have many more posts and photos coming over the next few months, but I just want to thank all my generous hosts and all the wonderful people I’ve had the fortune of playing with this year. The golfing community’s kindness and generosity never fails to amaze me and I can’t wait to play with more of you in this new decade! Here’s to more birdies and great architecture in 2020! ✌️

*Templates* Wanumetonomy only contains 4 templates and is the only Raynor without either a Biarritz or Redan. However, the 4 templates are excellent: 1st Pic - 17th hole - Road Hole Template. Long par 3 over water to a Road hole green complex guarded by a deep bunker left. 2nd Pic - 5th hole - Short template. A unique Short where the moat is half-bunker, half-water. The water was added after Raynor’s time to improve drainage and makes for a penal Short. 3rd Pic - 12th hole - Eden template. Not my favorite template, but this is an epic rendition with a very fast back-to-front sloped green with a central spine. 4th Pic - 15th hole - Maiden template. My favorite hole on the course. I didn’t get a great photo of the green but a Maiden is a sideways Biarritz that slopes back-to-front. Putting from the wrong plateau is terrifying.
