Review: Rolling Greens Golf Course

Course Name: Rolling Greens Golf Course

Designer: Unknown (1969)

Location: North Kingstown, Rhode Island

History: N/A

Conditions: 3/10, Like the name implies, the greens here are by far the best aspect, as they are fast and rolling. The fairways and teeboxes, however, leave a lot to be desired. Notably, the 4th tee box is terribly chewed up and the 9th fairway is a literal dirt patch.

Value: 4/10, It will cost you about $20 to walk this course. You can play North Kingstown and Exeter for similar prices and therefore Rolling Greens is overpriced.

Scorecard:

Hole Descriptions: After paying in a bar by the first tee, you wait to tee up on an elevated tee box on the 339 yard opening hole. This hole is fairly straightforward but trees do creep up on the right side, so left is definitely the miss. At 353 yards, the 2nd hole is much narrower than the opener. Trees loom on both sides of this fairway that becomes a plateau about 175 yards out. There is a small pond that will catch any approach shots left of this green. The 3rd hole is a legitimate dogleg right with trees on both sides of this narrow fairway. The right side is below this fairway and almost always necessitates a punch out. The 4th hole is the first par 3 on the course at 147 yards. While this is a short hole, the green is elevated and dome-shaped with a killer bunker short right of it.

The par 3 4th

The only par 5 on the course is the difficult 550 yard 5th hole. Trees (and a hawk preserve) guard the right side, while a steep embankment and pond guard the left side of this fairway. The approach shot on the to this green is quite narrow and plays severely downhill.

The 6th hole is a goofy little 325 yard par 4. This hole plays uphill and features a tree in the middle of the fairway and trees on the left side that block the green. This is really just not a well-designed hole due to these trees that often come into play. Another silly short par 4 follows at only 315 yards. This teebox is elevated, but the fairway slopes down and then heads back up to an elevated green. This green in particular is very fast and slopes hard from back to front.

The 8th hole is a strong 190 yard par 3 that plays downhill. The wind here is tricky to judge due to the treeline, and this green is also dome-shaped with 3 bunkers surrounding it.

The finishing 9th hole is the number 1 handicap for good reason. This is a long narrow 440 yard par 4 (for men) that plays uphill to a small green. The hole narrows as it progresses with OB guarding the right side the entire way.

General Comments: There is a net to hit balls into by the first tee, but otherwise there are no practice facilities. Despite never really being that busy, pace of play has always been a problem when I’ve played this course.

Verdict: Rolling Greens lags behind several good nearby public courses in pretty much every category and is not worth a play in my opinion.
